Clay Road Closes to Relocate Railroad Crossing

Clay Road at the intersection of East Hill Avenue is scheduled to close temporarily beginning April 10 to relocate the railroad crossing. The crossing must be moved as part of a Georgia Department of Transportation project to improve the intersection of U.S. 84/state Route 38/East Hill Avenue at Clay Road/Hollywood Street. The road is expected to be closed for 10 days.

The detour is approximately 6.9 miles long. Traffic will be routed to U.S. 41/SR 7/Inner Perimeter Road to New Statenville Highway to give vehicles access to the southernmost end of Clay Road while the crossing work is being done.

The $3.1 million project realigns Clay Road to tie into Hollywood Street. A traffic signal will also be installed. Turn lanes are being added on each approach except Hollywood Street, and bicycle lanes will be built along East Hill Avenue.

Currently, Clay Road and Hollywood Street traffic is controlled by stop signs. There is no stop sign or signal on East Hill Avenue at the intersection.

Work began late last year on this improvement project, and it is scheduled for completion in October.
