Utilities GIS Division is responsible for Design, Capital Planning and Utilities Plan Review. Utilities Engineering also manages GIS, Utilities Inspections and Utility Locates.
The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) section maintains records of the utility systems infrastructure throughout the City. This information is collected from “As-Built” drawings of new additions to the systems, as well as from field investigations using modern Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment.
During the construction of underground water and sewer utilities, inspectors and contractors maintain records of the locations of each facility. These records are then incorporated into the existing GIS database, which is maintained by the Southern Georgia Regional Commission (SGRC). GIS staff use this database to produce utility system maps, data for system analysis and maintenance, and to provide utility information to developers, contractors, and others.
Most utility projects within the City of Valdosta are designed by outside consultants. The GIS Division is responsible for the review and approval of the water and sewer utility plans. The review of these plans ensures compliance with regulations regarding construction materials and methods, as well as system integrity and public safety.
