Election Information
Non-partisan Municipal Election
The City of Valdosta has contracted with the Lowndes County Board of Elections to conduct a nonpartisan Municipal Election as required by the election laws set forth in Title 21 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.). The Lowndes County Board of Elections shall be the Superintendent of Elections as defined by applicable law in all respects for such election and will qualify candidates for the election and receive qualifying fees as set by the City. The current qualifying fee for the Mayor is $765.00 and is $474.00 for the Council members.
Number of Members
The City of Valdosta's Mayor and seven Council members are elected from single member districts with one at large, citywide. The Mayor shall also be elected at large, citywide.
Terms
The members of Council shall be elected to four year staggered terms of office and shall serve until their successors are elected and qualified.
Qualification Mayor
To be eligible for election or appointment and service as Mayor, a person must be a minimum of 21 years of age, be a resident of the City of Valdosta for one year prior to the date of qualifying, and a registered and qualified voter of the City of Valdosta at the time of qualifying.
Qualifications Council Member
In order to be eligible to hold office as a Council member and serve as a Council member, a person must be a resident of the district, have been a resident of the City for a period of six months, and be a registered and qualified voter of the City at the time of qualifying. If a district member of the Council changes his or her residence to a district other than the district he or she represents or to a location outside the City of Valdosta, that Council seat shall immediately be declared vacant by the City Council and the vacancy shall be filled as provided in the City Charter.
