VPD Wins 2024 Battle of the Badges Community Blood Drive

The annual Battle of the Badges Community Blood Drive, a friendly competition between the Valdosta Fire Department and Valdosta Police Department, was held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the City Hall Annex. This event, aimed at rallying blood donations from the community, saw an overwhelming turnout and enthusiastic participation.

In collaboration with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, the sole supplier to SGMC Health, the blood drive ensures that all donations stay within the local community, directly benefiting those in need. The event's primary objective is to raise awareness about the critical need for blood donations and to inspire community members to support this life-saving cause.

This year's competition was fierce, with both departments rallying their supporters for a common goal. The Valdosta Police Department emerged victorious, reclaiming their bragging rights by securing the most donations for their team. Donors were rewarded with custom Team Fire or Team Police t-shirts, adding to the event's spirit of camaraderie and community pride.

"We are incredibly proud of our community and grateful to everyone who donated,” stated Police Chief Leslie Manahan. “This event not only highlights the friendly rivalry between our departments but also underscores the importance of unity and collaboration in making a real difference in our community."

The true triumph of the day, however, lies in the impact of the donations. A total of 101 people registered, with over 25 first-time donors contributing. The event collected 81 whole blood donations and 8 double donations, resulting in 97 total units of blood. These contributions have the potential to save up to 291 lives, marking a significant achievement for the community.

"The spirit of Valdosta is evident in events like this,” stated Fire Chief Brian Boutwell. “Our community's willingness to come together for a greater cause is truly inspiring. Each donation is a testament to our shared commitment to saving lives."

The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive continues to be a vital event for Valdosta, bringing people together, fostering healthy competition, and most importantly, saving lives.
VFD and VPD thank the community for their unwavering support and look forward to another successful blood drive next year.
