This position performs chemical and instrumental analysis on drug and/or toxicology evidence, prepares a laboratory report that supports the analytical findings, and provides testimony as an expert witness in court proceedings. The additional duties of this position may also involve providing technical assistance and support to a law enforcement agency in the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases at the scene of crime as a Crime Scene Technician.

Overview

  • Seized Drugs - Analyzes items of physical evidence submitted to the laboratory by various law enforcement agencies for examination to determine the presence or absence of drugs and weight reporting, using state-of-the- art instrumentation.
  • Blood Alcohol Toxicology - Analyzes items of physical evidence submitted to the laboratory by various law enforcement agencies for examination to determine the presence or absence of alcohol and drugs and their levels, using state- of-the-art instrumentation.
  • Report Writing - Prepares written reports setting forth the results of each examination conducted, which forms a basis for some legal proceedings.
  • Quality Assurance  - Performs Technical on work product of other Criminalists in the areas of certification.  Successfully participates in proficiency testing as required by the areas of certification.  

 

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A full knowledge of the principles, concepts, theories, reference materials, and laboratory applications of chemistry and other related sciences.
  • Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analysis procedures, including the instrumentation used in chemical analysis.
  • Working knowledge of chemical laboratory safety procedures.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment, including a computer, calculator, and office software applications.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in chemistry or closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience performing bench level analysis in drug chemistry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
