Certified Firefighters, through the Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council, who have successfully completed an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a Fire Science/Administrative, Public/Business Administration, and/or related fields, from an accrediting institution, are eligible for a salary enhancement.

Base Firefighter Salary with ISO - $43,740.56

  • Additional Incentives:
    • $1,000 annually for Associates degree
    • $2,000 annually for Bachelor’s degree

Overview

The City of Valdosta is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter in the Fire Department. This position will

  • Respond to emergencies such as Fire calls, Medical calls, Haz-mat calls or Rescue calls.
  • Perform firefighting duties on fires, such as combating and extinguishing fires, rescue, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul procedures.
  • Provide basic first responder procedures while responding on medical calls such as CPR and defibrillation.
  • Conduct rescue operations involving, but not limited to vehicles, high/low angle, confined space, structural collapse, and trench.
  • Participate in daily, weekly, monthly and annual training.
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly station, equipment, and apparatus maintenance

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The employee in this position must be able to lift, pull or move up to 50 lbs., ability to climb stairs, ladders and maneuver up to one (1) mile; work with large and small objects. This position will work outdoors and indoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells, adverse conditions, sights, loud sounds, and repetitive operations

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eighteen (18) years of age
  • Possess a High School Diploma or a General Education Development (GED) equivalency
  • Possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • Must live within 60 miles of Fire Station 1 (106 South Oak Street, Valdosta, GA) or 20 miles of City Hall (216 E. Central Avenue, Valdosta, Georgia) if assigned a take-home vehicle, within one (1) year of employment date
  • Must satisfactorily complete the required background check, pre-employment physical, and drug test
