City of Valdosta Observes 2024 National Public Works Week

The City of Valdosta is proud to celebrate National Public Works Week 2024 with a series of events recognizing the vital contributions of our dedicated public works professionals. 

The national observance, sponsored by the American Public Works Association (APWA), was instituted in 1960. This year’s theme is "Advancing Quality of Life for All" and was recognized from May 19 to May 25.  

"Every day, our team is dedicated to maintaining the high standards of service that our residents expect and deserve," said Public Works Administrator Larry Odgen. "We take pride in our work and strive to keep Valdosta clean and safe."  

The week kicked off on Monday with Mayor Scott James Matheson reading a proclamation to officially declare this special week.   

The highlight of the week was the "Recycle with Public Works" event held on Thursday. From 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Five Points Shopping Center, our community came together to make a positive impact. Residents engaged in recycling services, learned about our recycling procedures and had the opportunity to sign up for the Adopt-a-Street program. 

Administrator Coordinator Dominique Nevlous added, "Our commitment extends beyond daily operations. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our services and enhance the quality of life for our community members." 

The Valdosta Public Works Department oversees the daily operations of residential and commercial sanitation services, right-of-way street maintenance, facilities maintenance, repair of city vehicles and equipment, and street sweeping in residential areas and designated state routes. Department staff also handle the collection and proper disposal of recycling, bulk items, and yard trash for city residents. For citizen protection, the department offers a mosquito spraying and larvicide program.
