Charles Phillips Honored as November Employee of the Month

Valdosta Mayor John Gayle and Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome honored Lt. Charles Phillips as the November 2016 Employee of the Month at the Nov. 10 City Council meeting. Lt. Phillips received a framed certificate and a check for $200, and his name appears on a plaque displayed in City Hall.

Lt. Phillips is responsible for the daily activities at his assigned fire station, which includes supervising personnel and responding to emergency situations where life, property and the environment is at risk. He also manages the non-suppression activities such as hydrant maintenance, employee training and pre-incident surveys.

Lt. Phillips is the neighbor of an elderly lady who cares for her 93-year-old mother. Since her mother requires constant supervision, she is no longer able to perform routine outside chores. Without being asked, Lt. Phillips performs duties around her home including maintaining the lawn, pressure washing her home, and regularly visiting the two of them. Although she offered to pay Lt. Phillips for his services, he declined. Recently, the citizen had to make several emergency trips out of town to visit her son who has cancer, and Lt. Phillips once again volunteered to assist his neighbor by watching her home and pets.

The City of Valdosta applauds Lt. Charles Phillips for being named the November 2016 Employee of the Month, an award he received for going above and beyond to serve citizens both on and off duty.
