Valdosta Fire Department and SGMC Health EMS Partner to Launch HE❤️RT Team
The Valdosta Fire Department (VFD) is proud to announce a new partnership with SGMC Health EMS aimed at reducing non-emergency calls to the 911 center and addressing basic human needs within our community. Beginning Monday, July 29th, this joint initiative, known as HE❤️RT (Homeless Engagement Resource Team), will see VFD and SGMC Health EMS forming one unified team dedicated to meeting the unhoused and those dealing with mental health disparities.
The HE❤️RT team will provide immediate relief to individuals in need, offering essential items such as water and non-perishable snacks, while simultaneously easing the burden on emergency services by reducing the number of non-emergency calls. By addressing basic needs directly, the HE❤️RT initiative hopes to foster a healthier, safer, and more supportive environment for all residents.
"Our community's well-being is our top priority," said Fire Chief Brian Boutwell of the Valdosta Fire Department. "This partnership with SGMC Health EMS allows us to extend our services beyond emergency response, providing crucial support to some of our most vulnerable citizens."
Emily Brown, Director of Emergency Medical Services for SGMC Health EMS, added, "By collaborating with VFD, we can ensure that our community receives comprehensive care, addressing both immediate needs and preventing potential crisis. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to proactive, compassionate care for all members of our community."
The HE❤️RT team will be out in the community between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This outreach effort is part of a broader strategy to connect individuals with the help and services they need, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more resilient community.
This initiative is supported by Greater Valdosta United Way, and Second Harvest of South Georgia.
