Neighborhood Walk Program Continues with Social Distancing Measures in Place

On Tuesday, July 14, 2020, the Valdosta Police and Fire Departments held a Neighborhood Walk in District 3, a continuation of a highly favored program that was put on hold due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

 These walks give public safety officials a chance to make contact with numerous citizens, who may not be able to attend a set meeting. The event also allows firefighters and police officers to hear feedback from all areas of the community.

 “We are able to hear resident’s concerns and try to help them with anything they may need. We get great responses from people we stop and talk to. Many people are surprised that we are just there to speak with them and find out if there is anything we can do to help them out. We see a lot of smiles from citizens who thank us for coming to talk to them,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan. “I love this program because it allows for meaningful conversations in a setting that is comfortable to them. Our goal is to build relationships between the Valdosta Police Department and the residents in our community – this program is exceeding our expectations.”

 “The neighborhood walk in District 3 was a huge success! VFD was able to educate residents on fire department programs and safety tips as well as the importance of operational smoke alarms. We received many compliments from city residents just happy to see these walks start back up and the opportunity it gives them to put a face and name to their local first responders,” said Fire Chief Brian Boutwell.
