City Begins Smoke Testing of Sewer System in Two Downtown Locations, Jan. 28

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the City of Valdosta Utilities Department will begin smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system in the following two downtown locations, beginning at 7 a.m., weather permitting

  • The manhole located at W. Hill Avenue and Toombs Street—The project will affect motorists traveling in the outside eastbound lane on W. Hill Ave, as well as traffic turning right onto Toombs Street.

  • The manhole located at W. Central Avenue—The project will affect motorists traveling westbound in the center lane on W. Central Avenue, as well as traffic turning right onto W. Central Avenue from N. Patterson Street.

Traffic control devices will be in place to alert motorists approaching the work area. As always, motorists are urged to adhere to these warnings and drive with caution.

The smoke-testing process will take place in sections of the city over the next 4 years to help the city identify and eliminate sources of storm water inflow and infiltration into the sewer system that cannot be identified by closed-circuit televising of sewer lines.
