Overview

This position operates heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of rights-of-way and other property and in the collection and transport of refuse

  • Operates a street sweeper to clean city streets.
  • Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, and other heavy equipment.
  • Operates and tractor and bush hog.
  • Operates a front-end loader, rear-loader, or side-loader along a predetermined route to collect refuse.
  • Inspects dumpsters for repair or maintenance needs and makes report to supervisor.
  • Operates a roll-off truck to deliver and pick-up roll-off containers.
  • Operates a knuckle-boom truck to collect yard waste, recyclable materials, and other items along a pre-determined route.
  • Operates a dump truck and trailer.
  • Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Assists in traffic control at work sites.
  • Performs related duties.

Qualifications

  • Requires a valid CDL
  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and right-of-way maintenance.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
