Michael Penland Honored as Employee of the Month

Valdosta Mayor John Gayle and Valdosta Fire Department Chief Freddie Broome honored Firefighter Michael Penland as the March 2017 Employee of the Month at the March 9 City Council meeting. Penland received a framed certificate and a check for $200, and his name appears on a plaque displayed in City Hall.

Since 2016, Penland has been employed with the VFD, where he is responsible for responding to emergency incidents and providing fire, rescue, medical, hazmat, and special rescue services to the citizens and community.

Earlier this year, Penland was inside his home when he heard someone screaming outside. When Penland went outside to investigate, he witnessed a neighbor being attacked by a pit bull. Penland placed himself between her and the dog in order to rescue her from being attacked. He was also able to scare the dog away without any severe injuries to himself or the dog. Penland provided first-aid care for the neighbor until EMS arrived.

Penland's quick actions, skills, and training abilities shined through this situation. The City of Valdosta applauds Michael Penland for his heroic actions and leadership skills and for being named the March 2017 Employee of the Month.
