Valdosta Celebrates Georgia Cities Week, April 17-23

The City of Valdosta will join other cities across Georgia in celebrating Georgia Cities Week, April 17-23, to recognize the many services city governments provide for the quality of life of citizens. The theme this year is "Go To Town" and will feature how Valdosta Main Street is a gathering spot for people throughout our region and an economic development hot spot.

"Cities provide the infrastructure for growing businesses and provide quality of life services for individuals and families throughout our region," said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle. "We are very proud of our city employees and the services they collectively provide that make our city attractive to our residents and visitors. We are also proud of our Valdosta Main Street and encourage citizens to visit the businesses downtown during Georgia Cities Week and throughout the year."

The City of Valdosta has planned events during Georgia Cities Week that cover a wide variety of interests. Citizens are encouraged to observe Georgia Cities Week by participating in the following:

Sunday, April 17

  • "Go to Town" for a Show: Citizens can catch lunch downtown before attending the last showing of The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, at the Dosta Theatre, at 2:30 p.m. To get tickets to this family-friendly event, call 229-247-8243.

Monday, April 18

  • Customer Service Day: Citizens can browse city information on the display tables, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., while enjoying some complimentary refreshments. The Customer Service Center is located at 102 N. Lee Street.
  • CDBG Ribbon Cutting: The city will cut the ribbon at 10 a.m. on a newly reconstructed home at 215 Williams Lane, built utilizing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.

Tuesday, April 19

  • City Blood Drive: Citizens are invited to give the gift of life at the City Blood Drive, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Valdosta City Hall Annex Multi-Purpose Room, located at 300 N. Lee Street.

Wednesday, April 20

  • Job Shadow Day: Forty students from Valdosta High School Advancements via Individual Determination (AVID) program will job shadow city department heads and give presentations to the Valdosta Mayor, City Council members and staff at a luncheon. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Thursday, April 21

  • City Employee "Game Day" Appreciation Luncheon: City officials will serve lunch to city employees at John W. Saunders Memorial Park to show their appreciation for the work city employees do year-round.
  • City Council Meeting/Announcement of "If I Were Mayor, I Would…" Essay Winners: Citizens are invited to attend the City Council meeting as Mayor John Gayle announces the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the "If I Were Mayor" sixth-grade essay contest, among other city business. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., at Valdosta City Hall, located at 216 E. Central Avenue.

Friday, April 22 (Earth Day)

  • Stormwater Curb Marker Event: The Stormwater Division will host a Curb Marker Event, from 9-11 a.m. Interested citizens may call 229-259-3530.

Saturday, April 23

  • Great American Clean Up & Bulk Trash Amnesty Day: Citizens are urged to participate in two community cleanup events, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Valdosta City Hall Annex, Lee Street Parking Lot. Several neighborhoods in the community will be cleaned up by volunteers, while city residents will have the opportunity to dispose of their bulk trash at four locations.
