Overview

This position operates heavy equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

  • Operates a backhoe, excavator, front-end loader, bulldozer and other equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains assigned equipment; conducts pre- and post-trip safety inspections.
  • Performs excavation and site repair duties.
  • Repairs landscaping, roadways, driveways, and sidewalks.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Transports equipment, materials and personnel to and from work sites.
  • Assists in the repair of water and sewer mains, fire hydrants, and water valves.
  • Makes water and sewer taps.
  • Flags traffic at work sites.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call.
  • Provides supports to other divisions and to contractors as assigned.
  • Performs related duties.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection system operation and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of the hazards inherent to utility maintenance work and the safety measures used to mitigate those hazards.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of job-related tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the establishment of safe work zones.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
